NLP Presuppositions

NLP_Presuppositions

The NLP supports the idea that you have the entire responsibility of your life. The way you perceive the world, the meaning that you give to the signals and messages from the others, the approach and your willing to adapt to the world, and finally how you respond and interact with the world.

There are few presuppositions that the NLP practitioners consider as true (assumptions) which are the foundation of the various NLP tools and practices.

Differences in the way we perceive the world: Why sometimes is the world not like what I want?

The map is not the territory: What is really interesting with this world is that if you put 3 people in the same context, there will be 3 different interpretations/experiences. We should accept the idea that people do not think the same way as we do.

Even if people decide and act in a really strange way (non-rational based on our perspective), there is always a positive intention behind the decision (satisfy a need). People make their best choices based on their perception of available resources. Therefore, we should separate behavior from the intention.

How can I evaluate and fill this gap?

What can I do then (if perception is different)? First, try to understand the perception of the other people. Differences are not a failure. They are just feed-backThe response from the people (response which may be different from or similar to your expectation) gives you some idea (feed-back) about the meaning of your communication and action, regardless of your intention.

If you find that there are some resistances in the discussion, it means that there is a lack of rapport.  Everybody has the capacity to adapt; however, if there is a difficulty to change, it is because of inappropriate states.

In other words, you have to do your best to find the most appropriate approach to bring the solution (Law of requisite variety). If one approach is not working, do something different.  There will be one time where your action will have some impact. Why, because everything is connected.

Everything is connected, and you are the responsible of your reality.

When everything is connected, it is impossible not to influence each other. This interconnection is valid between you and other, but also within yourself. The mind and body is one. Furthermore, you are in charge of your state and your mind, therefore your capacity to produce an effective result.  The individual responsibility is also supported by the idea that whatever you focus on becomes your reality.

These are briefly the presuppositions used in the NLP. We could see in the first section that due to our various experiences, we all have our own “map” to read the world. This approach will help us to have some understanding to the other people who are “strange”.  In the second part, we saw some principles which help to understand the differences and to fill the gap. Finally, we have the few principles which refocus the responsibility to myself, given the control I have on my mind.

NLP – Goal Setting

Achievement
I finally achieved to get the NLP practitioner certification after an intensive month (I worked during the week-days and attended the NLP trainings during the week-ends). This certificate is THE first step towards my long term goal, which is to better understand how our mind works.

I attended many trainings in the past, and each time, after a while, I just forgot what I have learned. This time, I really want to proceed differently in order to keep the new skills active and fully “operational”. I am just wondering what I need to do differently. After some reflection, I opted for this approach of sharing. Sharing my understanding and how I put them into practice.

Goal Setting. In this first article, we will discover together an NLP technique which helps to set a realistic goal.
You will see below that I will first introduce the concepts (in bold) and explain how I experience/apply it in my real life. We will see if such approach will really facilitate the understanding of the techniques.

> In order to have a realistic and “smart” goal, you may need to respond to the following questions and adjust your objective progressively based on the resonses you have: I really want to stop the old habit to forget what I have learned.

> State your goal positively (no negation): Ok, the previous formulation was not really as positive as that. New attempt: “In order to remember the new skills, I will write at least one A4 article (~600 words) per week. The articles will present how the NLP techniques helped me in my daily life”.

>The goal should be highly desirable – Why? What does it bring to you? When I have to think about the articles, not only it reminds me about the techniques themselves, but also a potential to bring solution to the problems I face in this stressful and busy word.
For the long term, I really want to be able to train people some tools which allow them to increase their capacity to improve the quality of their life experience.
I really and truly want to be able to provide these training in the future. This approach will open more options for my future.
Specify outcome After few weeks, I will have few articles and will see myself sharing my blog with some friends and NLP colleagues. I will have some feed-back which will bring me in the virtuous cycle (more articles, more feed-back, better understanding, etc.)

> Contextualize: What, Where, When, with Whom, and How? (4W + 1H) What: Blog and sharing NLP related articles, Where: world wide web, with whom: just myself through this blog. How: at least 3 hours per week. I should receive some feed-back within 3 months and keep this commitment for at least 6 months.

So far, based on these questions, I have all the elements to achieve the goal. Let us continue.

>Specify Evidence procedure: How do you know that you achieved your goal? What will you see? Hear? I will have my goal achieved when I have the articles relaesed timely, receive few comments from readers, and more effective approach to get out of my crazy 8 (to make it short, Crazy 8 is the moment when you have some issues and you do not know how to get out of it because you just swap between depression and anger. Could be a subject for a future article)

> Where are you now? What prevents you to achieve it? I have already setup my blog, I can start immediately.

>Is it self-initiated and self-maintained? Definitely, the achievement is under my circle of influence.
(Assuming that the web is working fine… which is a pretty acceptable assumption)

> Ecological impact: what is the influence in the other dimensions of your life (Romance, Family, Personal development, Social contribution, Career, Finance, Health and fun) I will have better quality time in all these dimensions, I have to spend more time on this article (personal development), I have to admit that as I am not that good on writing, this activity may take some time and that may have some impact on my romance… so I have to reduce it to an article every 2 weeks instead of the initial 1 article/week. This activity has 0 costs and potential revenue; Neutral in term of health and Fun.

> Extra options to achieve the same goal? Yes, I just realize that I could start to provide some conference in some places, practice regularly some NLP practitioner on-line test. Keep a journal. For the time being let us focus on the blog and if needed, we may consider those options.

To conclude my article, I then decide that “In order to remember the new NLP skills I have learned recently, I will write at least two articles (~600 words) per month. I should do this during the next 6 months, holiday included. The articles will present how the NLP techniques helped me in my daily life”.
Let us see if, through these questions and the corresponding adjustments, my objective will be met and to what extent it will really help me to increase the quality of my life (and to say good bye to the crazy 8).
Thanks for reading (This article has 900 words. I need to reduce it next time).
